Expatriate Legal Services for Americans Abroad

Expatriate tax services for Americans abroad who are thinking about renouncing, have already left, or just need to get current. Assured Financial Services handles the IRS side: back returns, FBARs, the Streamlined Filing Compliance Procedures, covered expatriate testing, exit tax estimates and Form 8854. If old balances or penalties are waiting, our Enrolled Agent can represent you before the IRS and work out a resolution, all handled by our own team in the U.S.

Our Expatriation Tax Services

The tax work behind expatriation and life overseas, plus IRS resolution when old years come back to bite.

IRS Debt Resolution

Owe the IRS from years spent abroad? We pull your transcripts, sort out tax, penalties and interest, and find a way to settle the balance before or after you expatriate.

Back Filing Before You Leave

We prepare the missing federal returns and FBARs so you can truthfully certify five years of compliance and avoid covered status on that test alone.

IRS Audits Appeals

If the IRS questions your exclusions, credits or foreign accounts, we answer for you in correspondence, office or field audits, and take it to appeals if needed.

Penalty Abatement

Late filing penalties from years overseas can sometimes be removed. We check First Time Abate relief and reasonable cause and file the request.

Form 8854 and Exit Tax

We run the covered expatriate tests, estimate any mark to market exit tax, and prepare Form 8854 alongside your final dual status return.

Streamlined Procedures and FBAR

For non willful nonfilers, we assess whether the Streamlined Foreign Offshore Procedures or the former citizen relief procedures fit, then prepare the full package.

Federal IRS Representation

Leaving the U.S. Tax System the Right Way

Renouncing citizenship or surrendering a green card is a one time event, and the tax filings that go with it are easy to get wrong. Miss Form 8854, or sign it without five clean years behind you, and you can be labeled a covered expatriate even with modest wealth. We start with your filing history, fix gaps through back filing or the Streamlined Filing Compliance Procedures, then run the exit tax numbers so there are no surprises on your final return. An IRS Enrolled Agent leads the work from start to finish.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does the IRS require when I renounce U.S. citizenship?

Giving up citizenship (or a long held green card) ends future U.S. tax residency, but the IRS wants a clean exit. You file a final return for the year you expatriate, attach Form 8854, and certify that your last five years of federal tax obligations were met. Depending on your situation, you may also owe exit tax on unrealized gains. If any of those pieces are missing, the IRS can keep treating you as a covered expatriate, with consequences that follow you and your U.S. heirs.
